THE WHEEL OF TIME COMPENDIUM ============================ This compendium contains summaries of all the WoT books, from TEotW to ACoS, by Robert Jordan, and is written by Lars Jacobsson. Summaries by Lars Jacobsson: THE EYE OF THE WORLD Prologue. Dragonmount Ishamael, the Betrayer of Hope, confronts the mad Lews Therin Telamon. Ishamael cleanses Lews's mind from the madness, forcing him to face what he has done, killed his family and friends. In anger and sorrow Lews opens a gateway to a deserted stretch of land, and steps through. Determined to kill himself, he draws on the Power, calling down a colossal lightning bolt from the heavens. The bolt passes through his body and is so powerful that the earth itself melts and fountains into the air, creating what will later be known as Dragonmount. 1. An Empty Road Rand al'Thor and his father Tam travel from their farm in the Westwood to the village of Emond's Field. Somewhere along the way, Rand spots a man in a black cloak, riding a black horse, but the rider disappears abruptly. He tells his father. When they reach the village they hear rumors of a gleeman that supposedly arrived the night before. 2. Strangers Talking with his friend Mat, Rand learns that there were more arrivals yesterday, a Lady Moiraine and a man in her service. Moiraine approaches Rand and Mat, asking if they would assist her in some small tasks. They agree and as thanks she gives them each a silver mark. Later in the day a peddler, Padan Fain arrives in Emond's Field bringing both merchandise and news of the outside world. 3. The Peddler Once most of the villagers are gathered around his wagon, Padan Fain tells of a false Dragon in Ghealdan and of Aes Sedai on their way there to capture him. Mat and Rand talk to their friend Perrin, and learn that he too has received a silver mark from Moiraine. 4. The Gleeman Thom Merrilin, the gleeman, meets Rand, Mat, Moiraine, Egwene and Nynaeve, the Wisdom of Emond's Field. Rand and Tam return to their farm. 5. Winternight Sensing danger, Tam brings out an old Heron marked sword. He is proven right when Trollocs attack. Tam manages to hold them off long enough for Rand to escape into the woods. When Tam joins Rand he has been wounded. The wound does not look serious but Tam has a high fever and is soon unconscious. 6. The Westwood Rand drags Tam towards Emond's Field on a makeshift stretcher, avoiding the Myrddraal searching for him. Tam is delirious, talking of the little baby he found on the slope of Dragonmount, that he brought home as his own. Rand starts to doubt if Tam really is his father. 7. Out of the Woods Rand arrives in a ravaged Emond's Field. He approaches the Wisdom but she is not able to help his father. Instead Rand brings him into the Winespring Inn. The mayor tells him that Moiraine is an Aes Sedai and that she might be able to heal Tam. 8. A Place of Safety Moiraine heals Tam. She also explains to Rand that it is necessary for Mat, Perrin and Rand to leave Emond's Field, since it was them the Trollocs were after. They must go with her to Tar Valon. 9. Tellings of the Wheel Trying to calm the villagers down, Moiraine tells them the history of Manetheren. 10. Leavetaking Rand, Mat, Perrin, Egwene and Thom leave Emond's Field in the night to go with Moiraine and Lan to Tar Valon. Not far from they village the are discovered by a Draghkar. 11. The Road to Taren Ferry Avoiding the chasing Myrddraal and Draghkar, the riders reach Watch Hill and then Taren Ferry. Moiraine's ability to remove fatigue from the horses has helped them travel quickly. Before crossing the river Taren Moiraine spreads a thick fog along it's course, tricking the pursuing Myrddraal. 12. Across the Taren After crossing the river, Moiraine sinks the ferry they used, in order to delay the pursuing Shadowspawn. When reaching a safe place arranged by Lan, they decide to stop and rest for the night. Moiraine tells Egwene that she has the ability to touch the True Source inborn. 13. Choices The group travels on towards Baerlon. From there they will continue on to Whitebridge and Caemlyn, before reaching Tar Valon. Lan starts teaching the young men how to use their weapons. When learning the sword, Rand uses a technique he calls "the flame and the void". Egwene declares she wants to be an Aes Sedai. Moiraine gives her lessons every night. They reach Baerlon and hear of a Children of the Light camp to the north of the city. They take rooms at the Stag and Lion. 14. The Stag and Lion Thom performs in the common room. Moiraine speaks to Min, one of the serving girls. Perrin, Mat and Rand begin having nightmares of Ba'alzamon. 15. Strangers and Friends Min explains her viewings to Rand, and tells him what she has seen around the members of their party. While exploring Baerlon, Rand spots Padan Fain, who runs away when he sees Rand. Rand catches him, but he is incoherent and half mad. While going back to the inn, Mat and Rand anger three Whitecloaks, among them Dain Bornhald. Dain swears they will meet again. Nynaeve arrives at the Stag and Lion, having followed their trail from Emond's Field. 16. The Wisdom Min has a strong viewing of Nynaeve, she is part of their destiny. Nynaeve is intent on bringing all the villagers home with her but Moiraine convinces her of the importance of getting to Tar Valon. Nynaeve decides that if she can not bring them home, she will accompany them instead. 17. Watchers and Hunters In the night a Myrddraal comes to the Stag and Lion and is about to kill Rand when Lan interferes. The Myrddraal flees. Lan decides it is time to make a hasty departure. As they reach the city gates they are met by Dain Bornhald and four other Whitecloaks, trying to deny them passage. Moiraine scares them off with the Mirror of Mists. 18. The Caemlyn Road The pursuing Trollocs and Myrddraal catch up with them. Lan and Moiraine fight them off, with some help from the Emond's Fielders. Several times while fleeing they have to change directions to avoid more Trollocs. In the end they have no option but to enter the damned city of Shadar Logoth to escape. Moiraine says the Trollocs dare not enter it, after an entire army of their's was slaughtered in there. 19. Shadow's Waiting Moiraine warns them not to bring anything from Shadar Logoth when they leave. Mat, Perrin and Rand decide to take a look around, without asking Moiraine's permission. Inside one of the buildings they come upon a man who calls himself Mordeth. He invites them to share the treasure he has found, he cannot carry it all by himself anyway. He leads them to a room filled with coins, goblets, jewels, swords and daggers encrusted with gems. When Mordeth learns they are in the company of an Aes Sedai, he tries to capture them, but fails. They flee, running back to the others. Moiraine tells the story of Shadar Logoth, once called Aridhol and capital of one of the Ten Nations. When Lan reports Trollocs within the walls they have to make another hasty departure. 20. Dust on the Wind Upon leaving they encounter Mashadar, the evil of Shadar Logoth. It separates them into four groups; Thom, Rand and Mat in one, Perrin and Egwene in another, Lan, Moiraine in a third and Nynaeve alone in a fourth. Thom, Mat and Rand are chased by Trollocs until they reach the river Arinelle where a boat is anchored. They manage to board it and wake the crew. While they are putting out they have to fight a few Trollocs trying to get onboard. Soon the ship, called The Spray, is heading down river. The captain, Bayle Domon, blames the incident on Floran Gelb, who should have been on watch. To pay for their passage Mat and Rand give Domon the silver coins they were given by Moiraine. Perrin and Egwene also flee towards the Arinelle, but fall over a cliff and into the river. They are separated but Perrin manages to swim to the far shore. 21. Listen to the Wind Moiraine says she can track Mat, Rand and Perrin by the coins she gave them in Emond's Field. However the two boys going down river have lost their coins. Nynaeve finds Lan and Moiraine and joins them. Nynaeve is told by Moiraine that she too can channel the one Power, and already has, unknowingly, when healing people. They travel south, to search for Rand and Mat. 22. A Path Chosen Perrin finds Egwene and her horse Bela, also on his side of the river. To escape the Trollocs they decide to head directly for Caemlyn instead of Whitebridge as was planned. 23. Wolfbrother Traveling for many days without seeing a soul, Perrin and Egwene realize they are lost. Approaching a column of smoke they find Elayas and some wolves. Elayas claims that he can communicate with the wolves. They say that Perrin is able to do it to. Since Perrin and Egwene are clearly lost, Elayas decides to help them reach Caemlyn. 24. Flight Down the Arinelle Rand meets Ba'alzamon in a dream. He says that "the Eye of the World will not serve you". Captain Domon tells of some of the amazing things he has seen or heard of while traveling, among them a 50 feet high stone hand clutching a crystal sphere, on the Sea Folk island called Tremalking. Rand finds out Mat is carrying a dagger from Shadar Logoth, and is already under the influence of it. 25. The Traveling People Perrin, Elayas and Egwene reach a Tuatha'an camp. The Tinkers there know Elayas and invites them to their fires. They are happy to tell Perrin and Egwene of The Way of the Leaf and of their search for the Song. They also tell Perrin and Elayas of a dying Aiel girl they found while in the Waste. She told them to warn people that "the Dark One means to blind the Eye of the World and slay the Great Serpent." The people must "stand ready for He Who Comes With The Dawn." Perrin and Egwene meet Aram. 26. Whitebridge Thom, Mat and Rand disembark in Whitebridge. A bitter Floran Gelb is kicked off the ship. They hear rumors saying that the false Dragon in Ghealdan, Logain, has been captured and is on his way to Caemlyn and then to Tar Valon to be gentled. They also learn that the Hunt for the Horn has been proclaimed in Illian. When asking for their friends in an inn they learn that someone else has been asking for them too. By the description they get it must be Padan Fain, and he is in the company of a Myrddraal. Thom tells Mat and Rand about his nephew, Owyn, who was gentled by the Red Ajah. The Myrddraal appears. Thom tells the boys to go to The Queen's Blessing in Caemlyn, where the owner will help them. Then he attacks the Myrddraal, buying time for Mat and Rand to escape. 27. Shelter from the Storm Perrin, Elayas and Egwene rest in the Tuatha'an camp, but soon they must continue towards Caemlyn. 28. Footprints in Air Nynaeve, Lan and Moiraine reach Whitebridge, but find Rand, Mat and Thom already long gone. Lan can smell the trace of a Myrddraal. They assume the boys have gone on to Caemlyn. Moiraine decides to follow Perrin instead, since he still has his coin and therefore is easier to track. 29. Eyes Without Pity Elayas, Perrin and Egwene flee across the grasslands while large flocks of ravens search for them. They run for an abandoned stedding, where Shadowspawn can't enter. Once they reach it the make camp near an old statue of Arthur Hawkwing, some miles into the stedding. Elayas tells them of Arthur Hawkwing. 30. Children of Shadow A large number of Whitecloaks enter the stedding. Elayas tells Perrin and Egwene to hide, then disappears into the darkness. When they are cornered by Whitecloaks, one of Elayas' wolves, Hopper, tries to save them, but is killed. Perrin, outwardly more wolf than man when enraged, kills a couple of Whitecloaks before being knocked unconscious. He wakes up tied beside Egwene in a tent with Geofram Bornhald and Child Byar. They mean to bring the "darkfriends" to Amador. 31. Play for Your Supper Mat and Rand walk towards Caemlyn, performing in inns or taverns for a meal or a place to sleep. 32. Four Kings in Shadow While performing in Four Kings Mat and Rand are spotted by a darkfriend, Gode. He traps them in a room with a barred window. Rand tries desperately to find a way out and suddenly an explosion blows out a large part of the outer wall, leaving a hole through which they escape. 33. The Dark Waits Mat and Rand travel through Market Sheram, where they scare off a nervous darkfriend. Rand is taken ill so they seek shelter in a barn, where another darkfriend tries to kill them but fails. They get a ride with a farmer and are dropped off outside Carysford. 34. The Last Village In a village on the way they spot a Myrddraal asking questions about them. They get another ride, this time with a man going to see the false Dragon in Caemlyn. 35. Caemlyn Rand and Mat reach Caemlyn. On advice from the man they traveled with, Rand purchases some red cloth to cover the Heron mark on his sword with. Mat is now heavily under the influence of the dagger, paranoid and apathetic. They reach The Queen's Blessing, where they are taken in by Basel Gill. He tells them that Thom was once court-bard in Caemlyn. 36. Web of the Pattern Rand meets Loial, son of Arent son of Halan in the inn's library. Loial thinks Rand is an Aielman. Rand tells him all that has happened to him and his friends, and Loial tells him that he is most probably ta'veren. 37. The Long Chase Lan, Moiraine and Nynaeve leave the Caemlyn Road and head north. They reach the Whitecloak camp and immediately launch a rescue operation. Nynaeve cuts the rope holding the Whitecloaks' horses. Moiraine produces thunder and lightning, making the horses run wild in the camp, distracting the Whitecloaks. 38. Rescue Lan sneaks into the camp and brings out Egwene and Perrin, and they ride off, Perrin and Egwene on horses Nynaeve brought back. Around dawn Moiraine calls a halt. Moiraine notices Perrin's eyes, now golden yellow from his contact with the wolves. Lan tells him of Elayas, once one of the best Warders, before he was driven out by the Red Ajah. 39. Weaving of the Web Rand goes to the palace to see the false Dragon being brought in. In the crowd he notices someone following him, but he manages to get away. To be able to see clearly he climbs a wall to sit on top of it. When Logain arrives he seems to be looking straight at Rand, laughing. Suddenly someone speaks to him, making him fall off the wall, into the garden within. 40. The Web Tightens Rand meets Elayne, Gawyn and Galad. He is taken to Queen Morgase as an intruder by Guardsman-lieutenant Tallanvor despite Elayne's and Gawyn's protests. Rand meets the Queen, the Queens advisor Elaida Sedai of the Red Ajah, and Gareth Bryne, Captain-General of the Guards. Elaida also believes Rand to be an Aielman. Elaida foretells pain and division for the whole world, with Rand at the center of it. Morgase releases Rand. 41. Old Friends and New Threats Moiraine, Lan, Nynaeve, Egwene and Perrin arrive at The Queen's Blessing. Moiraine takes a look at Mat and heals him as well as she can. To heal him properly will require many Aes Sedai. 42. Remembrance of Dreams Mat recovers somewhat but does not remember much of the trip from Shadar Logoth to Caemlyn. Loial tells Moiraine a similar story to the one Perrin heard with the Tuatha'an, about the Dark One blinding the Eye of the World. Perrin says he has heard that story too. Moiraine asks Loial to take them all to Fal Dara in Shienar, through the Ways. 43. Decisions and Apparitions Loial tells the group about the Ways. The Ways were made by men wielding the tainted male half of the True Source, during the breaking of the world. The Ogier Elders have forbidden the use of them, since they have slowly transformed into something evil. Some people never returned from the Ways, others came out mad, raving about Machin Shin, the Black Wind that consumed souls. Loial agrees to guide them to Fal Dara. 44. The Dark Along the Ways Leaving in the night, they locate the Caemlyn Waygate in a merchant's basement. They enter and travel for about a day. 45. What Follows in Shadow They sense someone following them through the Ways, but he/she never comes close enough to be seen. They also find Trolloc runes on a guiding, proving that the Shadowspawn are able to use the Ways When nearing their destination Loial senses the Black Wind. They reach the Waygate but it is locked. Moiraine cuts through it with white fire. They get out just before the Black Wind catches them. 46. Fal Dara They ride to Fal Dara and are welcomed by Lord Agelmar. The Emond's Fielders learn some about Lan's past. Moiraine declares her intention of going to the Eye of the World, in the Blight. Agelmar offers them cavalry for escort but Moiraine declines. Padan Fain tries to enter the Hold, but is captured. 47. More Tales of the Wheel Lord Agelmar tells some more of Lan and of Malkier. Moiraine questions Padan Fain and tells the others what she learned. 48. The Blight The group enters the Blight, and Lan tells them what he knows of it. Nynaeve and Lan declare their love to each other. 49. The Dark One Stirs While riding the next day they are attacked by both beasts and trees, but fight them off. When Worms appear they stand no chance and flee. Suddenly they are in the Green Man's place. The Green Man recognizes Loial as a Treebrother and Perrin as a Wolfbrother, and takes them to the Eye of The World. 50. Meetings at the Eye Deep in a cave they find the Eye of the World, which is the pure essence of saidin. When they return outside they find Aginor and Balthamel, two of the Forsaken. The Green Man kills Balthamel but is himself killed in the process. Aginor comes after Rand who flees. 51. Against the Shadow Turning to face Aginor Rand becomes aware of a glowing cord stretching out from his enemy, and of Power flowing through it. He steals Power from Aginor's cord and defeats him. Rand suddenly finds himself far away, in the final stages of a battle between Shienarans and Shadowspawn. Trollocs outnumbering the humans many times over, hundreds of Myrddraal and Draghkar, preparing to mount the final assault on the army of Shienar. Rand channels lightning bolts to incinerate the Draghkar, walls of fire and earth to overthrow the Trollocs and the Myrddraal, until only remnants of the great army remains. As the forces of humankind launch their last charge, Rand is enveloped in darkness. Again, Rand faces Ba'alzamon who has a massive black cord. Tired of running he severs Ba'alzamon's black cord and fires a stream of pure Light at his chest, hearing him wail before he himself is knocked unconscious. 52. There Is Neither Beginning Nor End Waking up, Rand joins the others again. As he tells Moiraine, Nynaeve and Egwene of what he has experienced, he realizes that he has channeled. Loial brings out a chest from the cave, containing the Horn of Valere. He also brings out a broken Seal, one of the seven on the Dark Ones prison, and the Dragon Banner. 53. The Wheel Turns They return to Fal Dara. Spring has returned to Shienar, and they hear news of a great victory in Tarwin's Gap. THE GREAT HUNT Prologue Whitecloak Questioner Carradin attends a meeting of darkfriends, called together by Shai´tan. He receives orders to kill Rand al'Thor. 1. The Flame of Tar Valon The Amyrlin Seat, Siuan Sanche, arrives at Fal Dara with 14 Aes Sedai and a large number of Warders and soldiers. 2. The Welcome Rand tries to escape Fal Dara after hearing of the Amyrlin´s arrival, but the keep has been sealed, and no one is allowed to leave. 3. Friends and Enemies Rand tries to alienate Mat, Perrin and Loial, to protect them from his imminent madness. Finding no way out of the keep Rand searches for a place to hide. Egwene suggests the dungeons, but Padan Fain is in such a vile mood that Rand refuses. Egwene hides him in the women's quarters. 4. Summoned Moiraine is summoned to the Amyrlin Seat, and escorted by Liandrin Sedai of the Red Ajah. 5. The Shadow in Shienar Moiraine displays the Horn of Valere and the broken Seal to the Amyrlin. Geofram Bornhald is summoned by the Lord Captain Commander of The Children of the Light, Pedron Niall, and sent to Almoth Plain between Arad Doman and Tarabon. He is to investigate rumors of invaders from the sea on Toman Head. Liandrin Sedai convinces Lady Amalisa she must search the keep for Rand, Mat and Perrin. 6. Dark Prophecy Trollocs and Myrddraal enter Fal Dara keep through the open Dog Gate. They free Padan Fain and steal the Horn of Valere and the dagger from Shadar Logoth before escaping. 7. Blood Calls Blood Moiraine, Siuan, Leane (all of the Blue Ajah) and Verin (of the Brown Ajah), heal Mat as best they can without the dagger. Verin Sedai translates the Trolloc script found in the dungeons after Fain's escape and reveals she knows The Dragon Reborn is one of the three young men traveling with Moiraine. Rand is called before the Amyrlin Seat. Lan dresses him up and tries to teach him how to behave in front of the Amyrlin, what he should say and do. He also gives him an enameled pin of a red eagle with wings spread, the symbol of Manetheren. 8. The Dragon Reborn Rand meets with the Amyrlin, Verin and Moiraine. He is told by the Amyrlin that he is The Dragon Reborn. Moiraine tells Rand what she knows of the life of Tam al´Thor, and of how her own quest began. Everyone make preparations to leave. Mat, Perrin, Loial and Rand are to come with Ingtar to hunt down the Trollocs and retrieve the dagger and the Horn. Nynaeve and Egwene are to go with the Aes Sedai to Tar Valon. 9. Leave-takings An arrow is fired at Rand but misses and cuts the Amyrlin instead. Ingtar´s party is joined by a thief-catcher named Hurin. Bayle Domon meet with Cairhiens in a tavern in Illian. They offer him 1000 gold marks to fetch a person from Mayene. He must also carry a sealed document to the Port Captain of Mayene. After leaving the tavern, Bayle gets suspicious and opens the document. It claims he is a darkfriend, guilty of theft. He is to be killed and all his possessions withheld. Bayle quickly returns to his ship and sets sail, heading west. In a secret compartment in his cabin he has one of the seven Seals, and some other trinkets, one of which is probably a sa'angreal. ("An age darkened ivory carving of a man holding a sword"). 10. The Hunt Begins Ingtar´s party rides hard to catch up with Fain and the Trollocs, but gain little ground. Just south of the river Eredrin they find two skinned Shienarans, Nidao and Changu, hanging from a tree. They were darkfriends and the ones who let the Trollocs in through the Dog Gate. In the next village they find a Myrddraal nailed to a door. 11. Glimmers of the Pattern Ingtar gives Rand a package from Moiraine. It contains the Dragon Banner. Rand tells Mat and Perrin that he can channel and that he thinks the Aes Sedai are trying to use him. 12. Woven in the Pattern Nynaeve and Egwene travel with the Aes Sedai towards Tar Valon, receiving lessons every evening. Without notice Moiraine leaves the party, followed by Liandrin and then Verin. Lanfear transports Loial, Hurin and Rand to an alternate world by using a Portal Stone. 13. From Stone to Stone Rand tries in vain to use the Portal Stone to return them to their own world. Hurin finds the trail of Fain and the Trollocs in this world too. 14. Wolfbrother Since their thief-catcher is gone, Perrin seeks contact with the wolves to get help tracking Fain and the Trollocs. Verin Sedai joins the party. 15. Kinslayer Loial uses his talent as a Tree singer to make a quarter-staff. Rand faces Ba'alzamon and receives his first Heron mark, burned into his right palm. 16. In the Mirror of Darkness Time or distance is somehow twisted in the alternate world, it is possible to cover long distances quickly. Loial, Hurin and Rand reach a monument; a spire, twin to the torn down Hawkwing Spire in the real world, but this raised over a great Trolloc victory. Riding on they rescue a lady being attacked by a Grolm. She calls herself Selene, and talks much of the glory that will come to he who blows the Horn of Valere. They ride on and reach Kinslayer´s Dagger, and another Portal Stone, pointed out to them by Selene. 17. Choices While protecting the group from Grolms, Rand feels the pull of saidin. With help from Selene, he manages to channel them back to the real world. 18. To the White Tower Nynaeve and Egwene arrive in Tar Valon and are taken to the White Tower by Sheriam Sedai, Master of Novices. 19. Beneath the Dagger Fain and the Trollocs reach Kinslayer´s Dagger where Rand, Loial, Hurin and Selene are waiting. Loial has figured out that the trail Hurin followed in the other world was where Fain was going to be, not had been. Rand and Loial sneak into Fain's camp and steal back the dagger and the Horn of Valere. 20. Saidin Rand's group crosses the border to Cairhien. In their path lies a great excavation, revealing a giant hand, clutching a crystal sphere at least twenty paces across, and a bearded man's face. When looking at the sphere Rand can feel an immense torrent of power flowing through him. They have to ride off when they are discovered by guards. 21. The Nine Rings Rand, Hurin, Loial and Selene take rooms at the Nine Rings inn. Selene leaves while the others are sleeping. An escort of fifty soldiers is forced upon Rand by Captain Aldrin Caldewyn, who believes that Rand is an outland Lord coming to play Daes Dae'mar, the Great Game. 22. Watchers Lan and Moiraine visit Adelas and Vandene Sedai somewhere in Arafelle, in search of information concerning Toman Head and the prophecies. Lan and Moiraine talk about their first meeting, and Moiraine says that Lan's bond will pass to another Aes Sedai if she dies. Lan is very angry. Moiraine is "crooned" by a Draghkar she could not detect because it was warded with Saidar. Lan and Jaem (Warder to one of the two Aes Sedai) kill it just before Moiraine is lost. 23. The Testing Nynaeve is tested for Accepted in the silver arches. 24. New Friends and Old Enemies Egwene meets Elayne and Min on the Tower grounds. They become friends. 25. Cairhien Rand, Hurin and Loial take rooms at the Defender of the Dragonwall inn. Rand begins receiving invitations from noble houses. Rand spots Thom performing in the Foregate. 26. Discord Rand and Loial visit Thom at his inn. They meet his girlfriend/apprentice Dena. 27. The Shadow in the Night Trollocs appear in the city and go after Loial and Rand. While looking for a place to hide they suddenly meet Selene again. The best hiding place they find is the Illuminator Chapter House. Loial accidentally sets off some fireworks causing remarkable confusion. Rand fires the rest of the fireworks at the Trollocs. 28. A New Thread in the Pattern Ingtar´s party encounters an Aielman; Urien, a Red Shield of the Reyn Aiel. He is searching for He Who Comes With The Dawn. 29. Seanchan Geofram Bornhald gathers his forces and prepares to face the darkfriends on Toman Head. Bayle Domon is boarded by the Seanchan and taken to Falme. There he is taken to see the Great Lord Turak, because of the Seal found in his cabin. Turak collects Heartstone and already has a Seal of his own. 30. Daes Dae'mar Rand receives more and more invitations but burn them all unopened, except for two; one from King Galldrian and one from Lord Barthanes. Hurin says he would make powerful enemies by burning them. Darkfriends steal back the Horn and the dagger and set fire to the inn. Lord Ingtar´s party arrives in Cairhien and joins Rand's party. 31. On the Scent Hurin tracks the darkfriends to Lord Barthanes' manor. Verin Sedai tells the history of the great statue sa'angreal being dug out. Originally there were two statues, a male and a female. The male is the one they saw, the female is still buried on Tremalking. 32. Dangerous Words Mat, Hurin, Rand, Loial, Verin and Ingtar visit Lord Barthanes to seek out the darkfriends. Loial senses a Waygate near Lord Barthanes' manor. They find Thom performing for the guests. 33. Message from the Dark Hurin finds the darkfriends' trail and it leads to a walled off area in the garden. Rand climbs over the wall and finds a Waygate inside. When he and Loial try to enter it they find The Black Wind waiting just inside. It tries to get out but Rand desperately channels it back inside and Loial manages to close the Gate. Lord Barthanes, a darkfriend, gives Rand a message from Padan Fain. It says: "I will wait for you on Toman Head". Since they cannot use the Waygate at the manor they ride for Stedding Tsofu, to ask permission to use theirs. 34. The Wheel Weaves Thom finds Dena dead in their room. The assassins reappear and Thom kills them both. Then he flees Cairhien. Fain presents the Horn of Valere to High Lord Turak in Falme. 35. Stedding Tsofu Rand and his party enter Stedding Tsofu. Loial tells his friends of the Longing, the need for an Ogier to return to the stedding from time to time. Loial meets Erith. 36. Among the Elders Verin is granted use of the Waygate, but they are once again met by The Black Wind just inside the Gate. 37. What Might Be The Elders hear of Rand having used a Portal Stone, and show them to one nearby. Rand manages to channel them to a Portal Stone on Toman Head, but they have lost time instead of gained it. When they arrive it is autumn. 38. Practice Elayne brings news of King Galldrian's death and of civil war in Cairhien. Egwene and Nynaeve are ordered by Liandrin Sedai to come with her to Toman Head to help Mat. Elayne and Min decide to come too. 39. Flight from the White Tower Liandrin takes them through a Waygate in the Ogier Grove in Tar Valon and leads them to Toman Head. 40. Damane Min and Egwene are captured by the Seanchan and taken to Falme, betrayed by Liandrin. Nynaeve and Elayne manage to evade capture. Liandrin returns to the Waygate. Nynaeve and Elayne set off for Falme to rescue Egwene and Min. 41. Disagreements Ingtar and his party travel toward Falme, seeking Fain's trail. 42. Falme Since Min is not able to channel she is released, and allowed to visit Egwene once a week. Nynaeve and Elayne survey the house where Egwene is held captive, trying to work out a rescue plan. 43. A Plan Nynaeve and Elayne are joined by Min. They meet with Bayle Domon to prepare their escape. 44. Five Will Ride Forth Perrin, Mat and Hurin spot Whitecloaks and find Fain's trail, leading into Falme. It is decided that Perrin, Mat, Rand, Hurin and Ingtar will ride into Falme to retrieve the Horn of Valere. 45. Blademaster Nynaeve, Min and Elayne free a damane and capture the sul'dam. Nynaeve puts on the sul'dam's clothes. They put the a'dam on Seta, the former sul'dam. Perrin, Mat, Rand, Hurin and Ingtar enter the mansion of High Lord Turak. They manage to get to the Horn and the Dagger before they are discovered. Rand fights the High Lord, a true Blademaster, and wins 46. To Come Out of Shadow Nynaeve, Min, Elayne and Seta enter the house were Egwene is held, Nynaeve pretending to be a sul'dam and Seta the damane. Min shows they way to Egwene's room, and they free her. Egwene says that the women who become damanes are the ones able to channel from birth. The ones who become sul'dams are the ones that are able to learn to channel, though they would rather die than admit it. Shipments of grain will go to Cairhien, where people are starving because of the civil war. They will be escorted by large portions of the army. Rand will go away for a time. To keep the Tairens loyal he drives Callandor into the floor in the Heart of the Stone, also preparing a trap for anyone who tries to draw it. He tells Moiraine and Egwene he is going into the Aiel Waste. 22. Out of the Stone Rand, Mat, Egwene, Aviendha, Moiraine, Lan and the Aiel leave the Stone and head for a Portal Stone Rand has discovered on an old map. Once they find it, Rand relies on Mat's luck to chose the right symbol for Rhuidean. 23. Beyond the Stone They all arrive at a Portal Stone not far from Rhuidean. Rand asks the Wise Ones' permission to go into Rhuidean, a mystical valley covered in mist. When Mat also asks permission, Couladin, who believes himself to be the leader of the Shaido Aiel, is so furious he tries to stab Mat with a spear. Both Rand and Mat are granted permission so they leave for Rhuidean. Aviendha, who is to become a Wise One, also goes into Rhuidean, followed by Moiraine. 24. Rhuidean Inside the mist is a great but unfinished city. In a large square in the center of the city, is a large Avendoraldera tree and a huge cache of angreal, sa'angreal and ter'angreal. Rand can sense which one to enter. Mat decides to wait in the square, but then he notices a similar door ter'angreal to the one in Tear. He steps in, but realizes he is not in the place of the other door. Here, apparently, you are granted three wishes at a price. Mat asks to be free of Aes Sedai, to have his memory back and to get out. Since he doesn't state a price, the beings in the door do so. Mat finds himself outside the door, but hanging by the neck from the Avendoraldera tree. 25. The Road to the Spear + 26. To the Tower of Ghenjei In a wolf dream Perrin chases the man they spotted earlier until he disappears into a tower. Hopper appears and warns him of Slayer, the man he is chasing. Slayer is in Tel'aran'rhiod in the flesh and very dangerous. Birgitte appears and tells him of the Tower of Ghenjei and of the Aelfinn and the Eelfinn. The tower is a gateway to the realms of the Aelfinn and the Eelfinn and the rhyme "Courage to strengthen, fire to blind, music to daze, iron to bind" tells you how to defeat them. 29. Homecoming Perrin and his friends arrive at Emond's Field. They go into the Winespring Inn and talk with Bran and Marin al'Vere. Perrin finds out that his family has been killed by the Whitecloaks and that they have captured Mat's family except for Abell, and the Luhhan family. They are still searching for Abell Cauthon and Tam al'Thor, the two of them are hiding in the woods. The Trollocs have returned, mostly ravaging outlying farms. The villages have not seen that much fighting. 30. Beyond the Oak Mistress al'Vere takes Perrin and company out to the woods, where they meet two Warders; Tomas and Ihvon. 31. Padan Fain, still with the Whitecloaks, has a Myrddraal captive. 32. Questions to be Asked Perrin, Faile, Tam, Abell, Verin, Tomas and the Aiel set off for Watch Hill to try to free the Cauthons and the Luhhans. They stop to rest at Jac al'Seen's farm, and Perrin tells them how he thinks they should deal with Trollocs and Whitecloaks. They should gather in the villages and be prepared to defend themselves, not rely on Whitecloak help. He gains a lot of supporters. A Hunter of the Horn, Lord Luc, arrives. 33. A New Weave in the Pattern As they get closer to Watch Hill they convince more and more farmers to gather at Emond's Field. A number of young men join Perrin's rescue party. Perrin, Faile, Gaul, Chiad and Bain sneak into the Whitecloak camp at Watch Hill and free the two families. 34. He Who Comes With the Dawn Rand saves Mat from choking to death. Mat has received a strange spear and a medallion in the shape of a fox-head. He has also got a head full of other men's memories. They walk out of Rhuidean back to the camp. They have been in Rhuidean for seven days, though it seemed only one. Rand reveals the twin dragons on his forearms, pronouncing him the Car'a'carn, the chief of chiefs. This does not persuade Couladin however. Rand asks Rhuarc's advice on how to proceed with the uniting of the Aiel. Aviendha and Moiraine return on the same day. The Wise Ones send dream messages to tell the other clans that a meeting will be held at Alcair Dal, the Golden Bowl, where Rand will prove that he is the Car'a'carn. The Wise Ones tell Rand of his real parents; the Taardad clan-chief and the Wetlander Maiden of the Spear. 35. Sharp Lessons Egwene enters Tel'aran'rhiod to exchange news with Elayne. Mat suspects Trollocs but Aviendha claims Trollocs dare not enter the Waste, they call it "the Dying Ground". Since the danger seems to be past they decide to make camp. Rand asks Rhuarc to teach him the Aiel way of fighting, armed and unarmed. Mat talks to a gleeman from the wagon train, Jasin Natael. In the night Myrddraal and Trollocs attack, but are met by determined resistance and are defeated. 38. Hidden Faces In Tanchico, Egeanin of Seanchan searches for a'dams and Aes Sedai. Perrin refuses to go with Bornhald, since the Whitecloaks did not help fight the Trollocs. 57. A Breaking in the Three-Fold Land Rand and the Aiel reach Alcair Dal, but the Shaido are already there. Their wagon and goods are inspected by a Whitecloak patrol. 9. A Signal When in a village to buy supplies, Nynaeve spots a signal from an agent of the Yellow Ajah. She and Elayne approach the agent, who invites them in for tea. When seated in the kitchen she gives them a message: "All Sisters are welcome to return to the White Tower. The Tower must be whole and strong." The tea however was drugged, and Elayne and Nynaeve pass out. 10. Figs and Mice When Nynaeve and Elayne do not return, Thom and Juilin get suspicious. They enter the village and are able to free the women easily. When questioning the agent, she says she was instructed to keep a look out for Elayne. Nynaeve and Elayne are unsure if returning to the White Tower is a good idea. To escape other Ajah agents they dye Elayne's hair black as a disguise. They leave in a wagon bought in the village. 11. The Nine Horse Hitch Siuan visits a tavern in Lugard, owned by an agent of the Blue Ajah, trying to get information of the rebel Aes Sedai. The agent gives her a name, Sallie Daera. The Practice of Diffidence Siuan reveals to the other Aes Sedai that Logain was setup as a false dragon by the Red Ajah. The Council appoints her head of the Aes Sedai spy-network. Gareth Bryne arrives in Salidar, much to Siuan's amazement and horror. 28. Trapped Bryne agrees to raising and training an army on behalf of the Aes Sedai, but only if he gets to be in full command of it when it marches against Tar Valon. After a lengthy discussion the Council agrees. Bryne also insists that Siuan, Leane and Min should honor their oath and work for him. 29. Fearing for Aviendha's life, Rand is able to block it from closing, and follows with as many blankets as he can carry. When he finds her again she has fallen through the ice into a river, and almost frozen to death. He drags her out, and channeling Air he builds a snow-hut, for Aviendha and himself to take shelter in. To warm her he channels a fire, and then slips into the blankets with her. This has the predictable consequence; wild and passionate sex. 32. A Short Spear When returning to the still open gateway, they encounter a large group of people. Rand realizes they are Seanchan. Together, Rand and Aviendha shield and tie them all up with the Power, before going through the gateway. Just as the gateway is closing behind them a spear is thrown through and is cut in two pieces by the collapsing gateway. Rand decides to keep the spear as a constant reminder of the Seanchan threat. 33. A Question of Crimson Studying the a'dam from Falme, Elayne says she may have figured out how they work. She claims she has been summoned by the Lord Dragon in Tear. Masema agrees. When they are going back Nynaeve notices Galad following them. 40. The Wheel Weaves Galad corners them in an alley. She receives news from Alviarin that Nynaeve and Elayne have been spotted in Ebou Dar, posing as full sisters. Though doubtful at first, Elaida is forced to acknowledge the news when Alviarin produces sketches of them, made by the Ebou Dari agent to the Gray Ajah. She sends orders to Teslyn and Joline, to have them brought to the White Tower. Alviarin also bring news of the Asha'man, now numbering 400 if the agent in Caemlyn is to be believed. To make the spears attack Aes Sedai, Sevanna and a few Wise Ones loyal to her has murdered another Wise One, making it plain that she was killed by the One Power. The rest of the Shaido, convinced it was Aes Sedai work, are now willing to attack. At first the attack seems to be a success, Wise Ones wielding the Power are overcoming the Aes Sedai. But then arrives first Perrin's rescue party and then the Asha'man, via Gateways, turning the tide against the Shaido. They flee before slaughter at the hands of the Asha'man. When the Aiel move on, the sister is gone. 1. High Chasaline In the aftermath of battle, emotions run strong in the camp of Rand's forces. More than 180 Asha'man and 90 Wise Ones are in the camp, together with the captive Aes Sedai. Cairhien and Tairen troops feel none too comfortable around the Aiel. Following Siuan's suspicions they trick Myrelle into leading them to the secret camp where she and Nisao are hiding Lan.
